Wuhan expands public participation towards environmental awareness (Google translation) Since 2007, Wuhan has taken significant steps to bolster public participation in environmental protection, reports the Changjiang Daily. In addition to increasing its own monitoring efforts, especially of local sewage plants, the Wuhan Environmental Protection Bureau also created a comprehensive website allowing citizens to access pollution monitoring information. The heavyweight champion of Chinese environmental law groups turns 10!
The Center for Legal Assistance to Pollution Victims (CLAPV), China’s premier public interest environmental law shop, celebrates its 10th anniversary this weekend. The Cassius Clay of Chinese environmental lawyers, Wang Canfa, is still going strong after all these years. I have gotten to know Professor Wang over the past few years, and he is the real deal – a champion for the rights of those bearing the brunt of China’s pollution problems, and a larger-than-life leader of a broad network of environmental lawyers, activists, academics and community groups. After three weeks on vacation in the United States, it’s good to be back and eat some baozi.
Among the environmental news in the past few days, two events have grabbed headlines in China. First, rumors that a local irradiation plant in Henan Province had suffered explosions and was leaking radioactive material led to a mass panic and evacuation of several hundred thousand Chinese residents. Local authorities quickly moved to round up citizens accused of spreading the false information, but editorial pages of Chinese press have examined the incident from then angle of open government information.
