Pelosi visits China, seeking cooperation on climate
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is currently in China. One of the major goals of her trip is to forward the U.S.-China dialogue on climate change.
From the New York Times:
In a speech on Tuesday in Beijing, Ms. Pelosi, a California Democrat, called the climate change issue “a game changer in the U.S.-China relationship” and “an opportunity we cannot miss.”

CCTV investigation: Secret polluters caught on film
Jiaodian Fangtan, the investigative news show on CCTV, had a fascinating segment about the devastating polluting caused by Meihua (or plum blossom) MSG Group, in Bazhou City in Hebei Province (not too far from Beijing). This story has all the familiar elements: Uncontrolled discharges of polluted water onto arable land. Choking, untreated air pollution. Dumping of industrial waste into open, unlined pits. A local government official is on film saying that they have no authority over the pollution because it wasn’t the government that discharged the pollution (!). Whales, Sonar and the Law
May 22 is the UN-proclaimed International Day for Biological Diversity (or IDB). Li Yang, from NRDC’s Beijing office, talks about some of NRDC’s work to protect global biodiversity, including a case to prevent high-powered naval sonar from killing marine mammals. Incidentally, this NRDC case, which ultimately went up to the US Supreme Court, was featured in the “Annual Selected Readings for China’s High School Students” and became the subject of a final exam question for high school sophomores in China.
