Apply for an NRDC China Summer Internship

The Beijing Office of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is looking for several summer interns who are energetic, environmentally conscious, intelligent, and self-confident college or graduate students. The accepted interns will work in different project areas to learn how policy research and advocacy is carried out by a non-profit environmental organization. There will be opportunities to participate in internal and external meetings and discussions as appropriate. The interns are expected to provide assistance in information compilation, research and analysis, as well as in drafting/editing and project activities as required. China Renews Its Commitment to Renewable Energy

China is currently the second largest consumer of energy in the world (behind the US) and is projected to overtake the US as the largest consumer by 2015. To meet its growing energy needs, China has made impressive efforts in recent years to expand its renewable energy capacity. This effort was kick-started with the passage of the Renewable Energy Law in 2005. After four years of rapid expansion in China’s renewable energy sector, China passed amendments to the Renewable Energy Law on December 26, 2009. While it still remains to be seen what the exact impact of the amendments will be, the amendments illustrate China’s continued commitment to expanding its renewable energy supply and overcoming some of the existing barriers to achieving this objective.

China Records Its Climate Actions By Copenhagen Accord Deadline

China has submitted its proposed climate mitigation actions to the UNFCCC in a letter dated January 28, ahead of the January 31, 2010 deadline in the Copenhagen Accord. Given Premier Wen Jiabao’s hands-on role, along with President Obama and the leaders of India, Brazil and South Africa, in creating the Accord last month, it is encouraging to see China demonstrate its commitment to moving global climate negotiations forward.

Guiyang promotes eco-civilization

guiyang3On January 8, 2010, the Standing Committee of the Guizhou Provincial People’s Congress approved a local legislation called “Guiyang City Promoting Eco-civilization Regulation” (《贵阳市促进生态文明建设条例》). This regulation was first passed by Guiyang City People’s Congress in October of 2009, and it contains provisions on environmental public interest litigation and other important environmental protection measures.
