About Us

Greenlaw is a joint service of the Natural Resources Defense Council ( NRDC ) China Project and the China Environmental Culture Promotion Association ( CECPA ).

NRDC is an international environmental nonprofit organization with 1.2 million
members and online supporters in the U.S. NRDC is comprised of lawyers,
scientists, policy analysts, and other environmental experts dedicated to the
protection of public environmental health, natural resources, and the
environment at large. Since its founding in 1970, NRDC has been a powerful
force in the protection of the environment in the U.S., China, and globally.
NRDC is headquartered in New York, with regional offices in Washington, D.C.
San Francisco, Los Angeles, the U.S. Midwest, and Beijing, China.

In China, NRDC works in partnership with the government, lawyers, and local
environmental protection civil society organizations to promote the development
of environmental laws, improve implementation of environmental laws and
policies, and strengthen the role of the public in environmental policy- and
decision-making. In the U.S., NRDC has helped to establish and standardize
the implementation of important regulations regarding the role of citizens in
environmental decision-making, public access to environmental information,
and a large number of standards related to the implementation of environ-
mental laws. NRDC experts contributed to the drafting of the Aarhus
Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making
and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters, the main international
agreement on public participation in environmental protection. Through
advising the China Ministry of Environmental Protection,
NRDC has helped to strengthen the system for public participation in
environmental impact assessments, in particular by extending the solicitation
period for public comment and by canceling the restrictions on the number
of hearing participants permitted, as well as other improvements. In addition,
NRDC has worked with many local partners throughout China to provide
trainings for hundreds of environmental protection figures, journalists, and
government officials on both domestic and international implementation of
environmental law and public participation.
