The first “green salon” for environmental journalists was held on February, 28th, in Urumqi, Xinjiang province. The conference was organized by Xinjiang Conservation Fund and co-organized by Xinjiang Ecological Society.

The salon focused on the topic of “environmental open information under financial crisis,” aiming to increase attention and attract support from local environmental journalists and citizens on environmental issues and policies. The Xinjiang Conservation Fund shared with the participants the “Xinjiang Action Guide to Accessing Environmental Information and Public Participation in Environmental Protection” as well as “Urumqi Action Guide to Accessing Environmental Information and Public Participation in Environmental Protection.” Mr. Shao Yu, a lawyer from the Xinjiang Wenbo Law Firm and Xinjiang College of Economics, also analyzed the text of the national open information disclosure measures.

About 20 people, including journalists from Xinjiang station of China Environmental News, Xinjiang Daily, Xinjiang and China National Radio along with representatives from education, academia and businesses, discussed Xinjiang’s environmental realities and environmental information disclosure. All the participants expressed their belief that Xinjiang’s environmental undertaking still has a long way to go, and that it could be made possible by the joint effort of people from all social sectors, including the oversight and guidance of the media. The gathering was viewed as strong start to such a coordinated effort.
