Whales, Sonar and the Law
May 22 is the UN-proclaimed International Day for Biological Diversity (or IDB). Li Yang, from NRDC’s Beijing office, wrote an article for World Environment magazine about some of NRDC’s work to protect global biodiversity, including a case to prevent high-powered naval sonar from killing marine mammals. The article can be found on the Chinese side of Greenlaw (click here). Incidentally, this NRDC case, which ultimately went up to the US Supreme Court, was featured in the “Annual Selected Readings for China’s High School Students” and became the subject of a final exam question for high school sophomores in China.
See the NRDC website “Lethal Sounds - The use of military sonar poses a deadly threat to whales and other marine mammals” for a video on the topic and further information.
